In an automobile engine, crankcases are the housings or enclosures that supports the crankshaft, piston cylinders, connecting rods and other associated parts are kept. In crankcase, oil from hot engine parts get accumulated and then cooled before being pumped back to the engine. The other functions of crankcase are protecting the crankshaft and connecting rods from getting damaged, acts as a pressurized chamber for air and fuel mixture and also helps in expelling the dangerous gases out of the engine valves. Crankcases available in the market today are generally made of aluminum, cast iron, forged steel, and magnesium.
